Elderly 'hit hardest by rising energy prices'

People over 75 in the UK are the age group hardest hit by the rising cost of energy and food prices, according to new research.

The study by Alliance Trust found that the elderly faced an inflation rate of 3.4 per cent in March, which is almost a full per cent higher than the official headline figure of 2.5 per cent.

In contrast, it has been estimated that people under 30 face inflation of 2.6 per cent.

Shona Dobbie, head of Alliance Trust research centre, said: "Our study continues to highlight the extent to which the impact of inflation can differ from the official headline figure.

"This month we have found that the over 75s are once again the most exposed to the negative impact of high food and energy costs."

According to previous research released by Alliance Trust, the elderly were also hit hardest by the rising cost of food and energy in February.ADNFCR-1054-ID-18553893-ADNFCR
